Il 16 settembre 1977 Maria Callas muore a 53 anni nel suo appartamento di Parigi, dove viveva sola con l'unica compagnia dei fidatissimi Ferruccio, autista e maggiordomo, e Bruna, la domestica. Nella settimana precedente alla morte, e a più di quattro anni dall'ultima performance, la straordinaria soprano greco-statunitense fa i conti con il peso della sua fama, con il ricordo ancora forte del compagno Aristotele Onassis e, forse, con un ultimo tentativo di tornare a calcare i palcoscenici dell'opera, pur indebolita e con una voce nella quale lei per prima non riconosce più il timbro de "la Callas" e delle sue indimenticabili interpretazioni.
