Rivelatosi già tre anni fa a un mondo dove vivono diversi coloriti metaumani, Superman è intervenuto in un conflitto armato tra due nazioni, per fermare un massacro. Questo ha dato vita a un incidente geopolitico complesso: la Nazione da lui ostacolata è storicamente alleata degli Stati Uniti, di cui Superman è cittadino. Un metaumano proveniente da quella nazione arriva così a Metropolis e sconfigge l'Uomo d'acciaio - è la prima volta che qualcuno ci riesce. Volato al sicuro in Antartide, Superman chiama in soccorso il supercane Krypto che, non senza prima strapazzarlo un po', lo trascina al sicuro nella Fortezza della Solitudine. Nel mentre Lex Luthor, coinvolto anche nella guerra dove Superman è intervenuto, porta avanti un insidioso piano per scoprire i segreti della sua nemesi screditarne l'immagine e avere finalmente l'autorizzazione del governo per eliminarlo.
