James, rampollo di una famiglia benestante, eredita il fondo fiduciario del padre e insieme alla moglie Sophie si trasferisce in una villa di periferia. Dee Dee Allen e Barry Glickman sono due star di Broadway alle prese con una situazione critica: il loro nuovo e costoso spettacolo è un grosso flop che ha improvvisamente distrutto le loro carriere. Nel frattempo, in una piccola città dell'Indiana, la studentessa del liceo Emma Nolan sta vivendo un dispiacere molto diverso: nonostante il sostegno del preside del liceo, il capo dall'associazione genitori-insegnanti le ha vietato di partecipare al ballo di fine anno con la sua ragazza, Alyssa. Quando Dee Dee e Barry decidono che la difficile situazione di Emma è la causa perfetta per aiutarli a riabilitare la propria immagine pubblica, si mettono in viaggio con Angie e Trent, un'altra coppia di cinici attori in cerca di un'ascesa professionale. Ma il loro egocentrico attivismo, tipico delle celebrità, gli si ritorce inaspettatamente contro e i quattro si trovano a capovolgere le proprie vite mentre si riuniscono per offrire a Emma una notte in cui può celebrare chi è veramente.
