Le Bellas si stanno esibendo niente meno che al Lincoln Center di New York, alla presenza del Presidente Obama e della moglie, quando uno strappo nel costume di scena di Ciccia Amy, nel punto in cui non dovrebbe strapparsi, muta radicalmente i connotati dello spettacolo in corso ed estromette per sempre le Bellas dalla competizione scolastica di canto a cappella. Una decisione esagerata e impossibile da digerire, cui si sommano altri problemi per il gruppo, non ultima la latitanza di Beca, che ha intrapreso uno stage in uno studio di registrazione. La possibilità di partecipare agli internazionali di Copenaghen e dimostrare a tutti "who run the world" è l'ultimo rischio che le Bellas decidono di correre prima di lasciare il posto alle nuove matricole.

Roman è avvocato a Los Angeles e lavora in uno studio che si occupa di clienti, appartenenti a classi sociali bisognose, spesso impossibilitati ad avere una difesa degna di questo nome. Roman, anche per il carattere che ha che lo spinge a non trattenersi dinanzi a palesi ingiustizie, è stato sempre tenuto dal suo collega William Jackson nelle retrovie a preparare la documentazione dei casi. Quando però William viene ricoverato in ospedale senza speranza di recupero tocca a Roman presentarsi in tribunale e già la prima causa gli crea dei problemi. Le cose si complicano quando lo studio viene chiuso e chi si deve occupare dell'operazione comprende le sue doti e ne vuole acquisire le competenze mettendole però a servizio del puro e semplice guadagno. Roman cerca di barcamenarsi fino a quando un giorno si fa tentare da un'azione illegale.

La serie è ambientata nella città costiera di Storybrooke, nel Maine, in cui gli abitanti sono in realtà personaggi di varie fiabe e altre storie che sono state trasportate in una città reale e derubate dei loro ricordi originali dalla Regina cattiva, Regina (Lana Parrilla) che ha usato una potente maledizione ottenuta da Tremotino (Robert Carlyle). Gli abitanti di Storybrooke, di cui Regina è il sindaco, vivono un'esistenza immutabile da 28 anni, ignari del fatto che non stanno invecchiando. L'unica speranza della città è nelle mani di Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison), la figlia di Biancaneve (Ginnifer Goodwin) e del Principe azzurro (Josh Dallas), che è stata trasportata dalla Foresta Incantata al mondo reale attraverso un albero magico da bambina prima che potesse essere maledetta. In quanto tale, è l'unica in grado di rompere la maledizione e ripristinare i ricordi perduti dei cittadini. Viene aiutata dal figlio, Henry (Jared S. Gilmore), con cui si è stata recentemente riunita dopo averlo dato in adozione alla nascita, e il suo libro delle fiabe intitolato Once Upon a Time che contiene la chiave per rompere la maledizione. Henry è anche il figlio adottivo di Regina, ciò fornisce una fonte di conflitto ed interesse comune tra le due donne.
