Hèctor Abad Gomez è un importante medico che opera nella polarizzata e violenta Medellin degli anni Settanta. Padre di famiglia che non si preoccupa solo del benessere dei propri figli ma anche di quello dei bambini appartenenti alle classi più svantaggiate, crede in un'educazione basata sulla tolleranza e sull'amore. Il destino, tuttavia, si accanisce sulla sua famiglia quando un cancro si porta via una delle sue amate figlie. Spinto dalla tristezza e dalla rabbia, Hector comincia a occuparsi di cause sociali e politiche, diventando uno dei maggiori attivisti della sua epoca. Ciò non sarà però ben visto dai poteri forti.
