My Generation Extras: Almost as exciting as the main concert itself are the extras, including the first ever live performance of Tommy at the London Coliseum in 1969. The best sections of the Coliseum performance, video-wise at least (and that's not saying much--these are pretty badly damaged 16mm film masters), are presented in a separate piece. You can also access the more or less complete Tommy from the same performance via the main menu, though there are some gaps in the filming augmented by stills. There's also a performance of The Who's pre-Tommy mini-opera "A Quick One." While the image and sound quality of these concerts is not on a par with the main feature, their historical value more than makes up for it. Soundwise, I actually wasn't that disappointed (though there's nothing close to the clarity of the main concert here), and that's really what matters as far as I'm concerned. The London group's magic was shattered upon the death of Keith Moon in 1978; their two 1981 and 1982 albums incidentally drew little interest. Their 2006 album, which came four years after the death of bassist John Entwistle barely raised the bar. It was difficult to expect anything great to come from the remaining duo but then, in 2019, Who was released. The tireless efforts of Pete Townshend, the band's determined guitarist and composer was ready to do anything to make another album after many long years out of the studio. Produced by Dave Sardy (who we know more for his work with bands like Helmet, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Marilyn Manson and System of a Down), this record goes back to a true and honest form of rock that some more experimental additions (such as some electronic sounds) do not tarnish. Townshend, conscience of his age like his associate Roger Daltrey, recognises the futility of trying to chase after a lost youth. On the contrary, many of the songs seem to articulate the image of inevitability, the aging rocker. Are rockers destined for long-lasting careers? Perhaps not. But they have weathered the winds and here they are. The foundation to many of the songs is his novel Age of Anxiety which was intended to be converted into a musical before Townshend turned his interest onto making a veritable Who album. Who is a not the most full-on rock album and is less energetic than what we are used to. But it is incredibly well written (Rockin' Rage, Detour), containing beautiful, unifying choruses (Street Song) and some forthright messages as heard on the first words to All This Music Must Fade: "I don't care, I know you're gonna hate this song, and that's fair, we never really got along." It's a somewhat indirect way of talking about the relationship between Townshend and Daltrey who don't compose together. The guitarist writes, the singer performs. After years of a love-hate relationship and recurrent feuds, one might imagine that this bad chemistry would show on the album, especially considering the separate recording sessions. However, the result is clear. It works! The rockers who sang of dying before getting old in 1965 now sing of not wanting to get wise (I Don't Wanna Get Wise). If getting wise means recording songs like these ones, we won't complain. The Deluxe version offers a remix by Townshend of Beads on One String and also a live acoustic taken from their unique concert given on Valentine's Day 2020 at Kingston-on-Thames, 50 years day for day after the recording of the famous Live at Leeds. While it lacks some songs played on this day (notably Pinball Wizard and Behind Blue Eyes), simply listening to classics like Substitute and Won't Get Fooled Again in this new format is enchanting and hard-hitting despite the lack of saturation. Our old rockers are still going strong and know how to interpret tracks that balance the band's identity without ever making themselves appear old and frail. A real mark of wisdom despite their refusal to accept so. The band performed the rock opera alongside a series of backing tapes containing synthesizers and sound effects, a decision that put the mercurial Who into a straitjacket and led to uncharacteristically restrained performances. For years, the legend that Quadrophenia didn't lend itself to the stage persisted but things started to change in 1996, when an all-star production was launched at London's Hyde Park. This was such a rousing success that U.K. and U.S. tours followed and, from that point on, the Who returned to Quadrophenia far more often than Tommy, which they essentially retired after it turned into a Broadway musical. Anchored by a July 8, 2013 performance, 2014's Quadrophenia: Live in London pays tribute to the enduring legacy of Pete Townshend's rock opera. The concert is available in a variety of iterations, the simplest containing nothing more than the 2013 show -- this is available as a double-CD set, a Blu-ray, and a DVD, plus a digital download -- the most lavish being a five-disc box that contains the concert in the CD, Blu-ray, and DVD formats, along with the first-ever 5.1 mix of the original 1973 album, a feature many fans wish was included in the 2011 deluxe box set reissue of the album (there, only eight songs were mixed into Surround). If there ever were a record that cried out to be remixed in 5.1 Surround Sound, it's Quadrophenia -- it's enveloping enough as stereo, but the synths and sound effects beg for an immersive experience -- so this mix (which is also available separately as a Blu-ray Pure Audio single disc) is a worthwhile enticement on its own terms, but the 2013 show is strong on its own terms, too. Working with their longtime touring band of drummer Scott Devours, bassist Pino Paladino, and rhythm guitarist Simon Townshend, Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey are tight and assured, substituting a weathered gravitas for the original's roiling teenage angst. Neither singer can hit the high notes he did in the '70s but neither tries, and their deeper voices add a sense of melancholy that contrasts well with the vigorous muscle of the band.
