Bill Binney, critto-matematico, decodificatore, analista dell’intelligence è stato Direttore Tecnico della National Security Agency (NSA) degli Stati Uniti, dove ha lavorato per più di 30 anni. Dopo la fine della Guerra Fredda, insieme a un piccolo team all’interno della NSA, inizia a sviluppare un rivoluzionario programma di sorveglianza in grado di captare qualsiasi segnale elettronico sulla terra, filtrarlo e fornire risultati in tempo reale, tutto questo senza invadere la privacy. Un programma perfetto, a parte un piccolo dettaglio, troppo economico. Per questo motivo i vertici della NSA, bramosi di dollari, lo scaricano tre settimane prima dell’11 settembre. Il 31 ottobre 2001 Binney diede le dimissioni, dopo aver scoperto che elementi del suo programma di monitoraggio dati (ThinThread) erano stati usati per spiare la popolazione americana.

Questa è la storia di Edmond Vidal, conosciuto da tutti come Momon, che ha ormai sessant'anni e vive una vita tranquilla insieme alla moglie, ma in lui restano vivi i ricordi della sua lunga carriera criminale che lo ha visto, insieme al complice/fratello di sangue Serge Suttel e alla banda da loro messa in piedi, terrorizzare la Francia dal 1967 al 1974, compiendo più di trentacinque rapine, compresa quella ultra milionaria all'Hotel delle Poste a Strasburgo, fino all'inevitabile e drammatico arresto. Ripensando a quegli attimi, Momon ricorda anche a come tutto ebbe inizio in seguito a uno spiacevole episodio durante la sua infanzia, quando venne arrestato insieme a Serge dal campo nomadi in cui vivevano e condotti in riformatorio per aver rubato delle ciliegie.
