Mentre l'Europa è alle prese con lo scoppio della seconda guerra mondiale, il piccolo Martin inizia ad amare il nuovo fratello Dovidl, un talentuoso violinista che ha nove anni come lei ed è un rifugiato ebreo polacco a Londra. A 21 anni, prima del concerto di debutto, Dovidl scompare senza lasciare traccia, portando vergogna e rovina nella sua famiglia. Molto tempo dopo, un giovane violinista mostra a Martin, oramai cinquantaseienne, qualcosa che solo Dovidl poteva insegnarli. Ciò fa scattare in Martin l'idea di ritrovare il fratello, cominciando un'odissea che lo porterà oltreoceano e arrivando a sorprendenti rivelazioni.
