Billi Wang è nata a Pechino ma vive a New York da quando aveva sei anni. Il suo contatto sentimentale con la Cina è Nai Nai, la sua vecchia nonna, ancorata alle tradizioni e alla famiglia. Salda e praticamente indistruttibile, a Nai Nai viene diagnosticato un cancro. La famiglia decide di nasconderle la verità e di trascorrere con lei gli ultimi mesi che le restano da vivere. Figli e nipoti, traslocati negli anni in America e in Giappone, rientrano in Cina per riabbracciarla e per 'improvvisare' un matrimonio che allontani qualsiasi sospetto. Risoluti e uniti nella bugia, trovano in Billi una resistenza. Inconcludente nella vita e insoddisfatta della vita, Billi vorrebbe liberarsi dell'angoscia e rivelare alla nonna la prognosi infausta. Tra oriente e occidente, troverà una sintesi tra due culture e due condotte etiche.

Sydney Wells ha perso la vista quando era ancora una bambina. Ora le viene offerta la possibilità di un trapianto di cornea che dovrebbe consentirle di tornare a vedere normalmente. L'operazione riesce ma la giovane donna dichiara di vedere esseri spaventosi e trasformazioni dei luoghi non solo negli incubi notturni ma anche durante la veglia. Inoltre, già mentre era ancora in convalescenza in ospedale, ha assistito alla dipartita della compagna di stanza accompagnata nell'al di là da un mostruoso essere. Il suo sospetto (inizialmente non creduto da altri) è di stare vedendo ciò che chi le ha donato le cornee poteva vedere.

Nel XXIII secolo, il sistema solare è stato colonizzato dagli umani e si trova una situazione di precario equilibrio geopolitico a causa delle tensioni fra la Terra e le ex-colonie marziane, oramai indipendenti sotto il vessillo della Repubblica congressionale marziana, e il degrado sociale in cui sopravvive gran parte della popolazione degli avamposti nella fascia principale degli asteroidi e i pianeti esterni.
