Yaiba è un giovanissimo ragazzo che vive nel cuore della foresta assieme al padre Kenjuro, passando le giornate ad allenarsi per diventare un formidabile samurai. Nonostante il suo forte legame con la natura e le vecchie tradizioni, però, la storia è in realtà ambientata nel XX secolo! Infatti, in seguito ad una serie di eventi, Yaiba sarà costretto a trasferirsi in città dove dovrà adattarsi a questo nuovo e complesso stile di vita. Il destino gli permetterà di incontrare Onimaru, un altro abile spadaccino con il quale incrocerà la sua spada, risvegliando rispettivamente il Dio del Tuono e il Dio del Vento, le due antiche e potenti entità che risiedono in loro.

Il trentaduenne Kafka Hibino fa parte di una squadra speciale addetta allo smantellamento dei resti dei Kaiju, che vengono uccisi dalle forze di difesa. Kafka è amico d'infanzia di Mina Ashiro. I due, tempo addietro, si promisero di entrare nel corpo delle forze di difesa e proteggere il Giappone dai Kaiju. Hibino non riuscì a superare l'esame di ammissione, abbandonando i suoi sogni. Mina, mantenendo la promessa, divenne invece il capitano della III divisione del corpo delle forze di difesa. Un giorno, Kafka affronta uno strano Kaiju con il quale si fonde. Da quel momento il giovane acquisisce la capacità di trasformarsi nel Kaiju numero 8, ottenendo particolari abilità.

La vita di Sakuta Azusagawa prende una piega inaspettata quando incontra una giovane attrice, Mai Sakurajima, intenta a girovagare per una libreria con indosso un costume da coniglietta, ma senza che nessuno noti la sua presenza. Mai rimane incuriosita dal fatto che Sakuta sia l'unico in grado di vederla e che gli altri non considerino minimamente la sua presenza, anche quando indossa un abito meno stravagante o rimane lontana dalla sua vita da attrice. Chiamando questo fenomeno "Sindrome dell'adolescenza", Sakuta decide di risolvere il mistero, legando maggiormente con Mai e anche con altre ragazze che soffrono della stessa sindrome.

Il trentaduenne Kafka Hibino fa parte di una squadra speciale addetta allo smantellamento dei resti dei Kaiju, che vengono uccisi dalle forze di difesa. Kafka è amico d'infanzia di Mina Ashiro. I due, tempo addietro, si promisero di entrare nel corpo delle forze di difesa e proteggere il Giappone dai Kaiju. Hibino non riuscì a superare l'esame di ammissione, abbandonando i suoi sogni. Mina, mantenendo la promessa, divenne invece il capitano della III divisione del corpo delle forze di difesa. Un giorno, Kafka affronta uno strano Kaiju con il quale si fonde. Da quel momento il giovane acquisisce la capacità di trasformarsi nel Kaiju numero 8, ottenendo particolari abilità.

Tutto cambia quando viene sorpresa da Yōsuke Ueno, il ragazzo più popolare della scuola. Bello, socievole, sicuro di sé… esattamente l’opposto di lei.
