E' uno scrittore intellettuale, sposato con una ricca ereditiera che vive totalmente distaccata dalla realtà. Durante un dibattito televisivo nel quale Fougerole promuove il suo nuovo romanzo, intitolato "Benvenuti a Casa Mia", lo scrittore invita i ricchi e i benestanti ad accogliere nelle loro case i più bisognosi. Ma a un certo punto, il suo avversario lo sfida a mettere in pratica quello che suggerisce ai suoi lettori. In evidente imbarazzo, Fougerole accetta la sfida per non perdere la faccia. Nel 2045, anno in cui il mondo sta per collassare sull’orlo del caos, le persone hanno trovato la salvezza nell’OASIS, un enorme universo di realtà virtuale creato dal brillante ed eccentrico James Halliday. L'agente segreto Bryan, dopo tanti anni di servizio nei quali ha più e più volte sacrificato la famiglia per amore della patria, si è dimesso per poter stare vicino alla figlia diciassettenne che vive con la madre e il facoltoso patrigno in una lussuosa villa a Los Angeles. Quando Kim gli chiede il permesso di poter andare a Parigi con un'amica lui, da prima un po' titubante, acconsente a patto che la figlia lo chiami ogni giorno e lo informi dei suoi spostamenti. Giunte nella capitale francese le due ragazze vengono rapite da un'organizzazione che commercia in prostitute per venderle al miglior offerente.
