La storia vera di Ron Woodroof, un elettricista/cowboy ribelle del Texas al quale, nel 1986, viene diagnosticato l’AIDS, con una prognosi di pochi giorni di vita. Frustrato dalla mancanza di opzioni mediche disponibili e tutt’altro che rassegnato a questa sorta di condanna a morte, Ron trova un’ancora di salvezza nei farmaci alternativi e in un mix di vitamine di sua invenzione. Entra così in contatto con altri ammalati e familiarizza con loro, superando l’iniziale omofobia e ritrovandosi al centro di un cospicuo business di contrabbando. Inizia così una tesissima partita a scacchi con la legge che vieta i farmaci da lui usati e con la polizia.

Nel 1942 la 6ª Armata tedesca, accerchiata dai russi, sta per crollare a Stalingrado. Per un gesto di insubordinazione un gruppo di soldati rischia la corte marziale e, intanto, è destinato a missioni pericolose. Quando sono costretti a fucilare civili russi, tra cui un bambino, in tre di loro nasce la voglia di disertare. Quello di Vilsmaier _ anche sceneggiatore, scenografo e produttore associato _ è un film contro la guerra, contro quella guerra e contro il modo con cui fu fatta dai tedeschi. Non dice nulla di nuovo, ma lo dice bene, con un robusto mestiere narrativo, in modi attendibili, senza indugi compiaciuti sulla violenza ferina dell'inferno che rappresenta. E con due o tre momenti di dolente drammaticità, tra cui il finale.

Il gioco diventa così la loro nuova realtà, essendo intrappolati nel mondo virtuale senza la possibilità di eseguire il log out. Elder's Tale è il MMORPG fantasy più famoso e popolare al mondo, con milioni di giocatori. Ma con la undicesima espansione distribuita, Novasphere Pioneers, per motivi sconosciuti 36.000 giocatori collegati al server giapponese, più altre centinaia provenienti dal resto del mondo, si trovano improvvisamente trasportati all'interno del gioco e "indossano" i loro avatar come se fossero i loro veri corpi. Il gioco diventa così la loro nuova realtà, essendo intrappolati nel mondo virtuale senza la possibilità di eseguire il log out.
