Batou è un cyborg. Le uniche tracce di umanità risiedono nel suo cervello e nel ricordo di una donna chiamata Mayor. Batou sta indagando su una nuova specie di creature i gynoid. Esseri dall'aspetto femminile creati per la soddisfazione del desiderio sessuale che uccidono i loro padroni. La detection lo indurrà a porsi domande sul suo essere più profondo.

Elegante ed impavido, Dillinger ha un proiettile sempre in canna e un cappotto per ogni occasione e per ogni signora, rapinata del suo cuore o rapita dal suo fascino. La sua nemesi, efficiente e laconica, ha il volto e il garbo "gable" di Melvin Purvis, determinato ad accomodarlo sulla sedia elettrica. Il Team 7 composto da Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, Sakura Haruno e Kakashi Hatake parte per una nuova missione dove dovrà riportare la pace nel Paese della Neve. La storia girerà intorno ad un Daimyo (ricco uomo d'affari, legislatore del Paese) di nome Sosetsu Kazahana, che aveva destinato al trono la propria figlia. Il fratello minore di Sosetsu, Doto, assalito dall'invidia e dalla conquista del potere ucciderà in una rivolta suo fratello prendendo in mano il controllo del Villaggio. La figlia di Sosetsu, Koyuki, dopo aver ricevuto un particolare cristallo, decide di fuggire via dalla propria città natale. Il team sarà impegnato in una nuova missione che consiste nel proteggere l'attrice Yukie che altri non è che la Principessa Koyuki durante le riprese del film, dove sarà attaccata dai 3 ninja della Neve: Nadare, Mizore, e Fubuki. Koyuki, grazie all'aiuto di Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura e Kakashi accetterà di ritornare indietro e di riconquistare il potere perduto.

In un lontano e tecnologico futuro la civilizzazione ha raggiunto la definitiva forma informatica detta “Net-based”. In passato un “virus” ha causato malfunzionamenti sfuggiti al controllo del sistema automatizzato, ne è risultata una replica infinita multi-strato della struttura della città. L’umanità ha perso l’accesso alla cabina di controllo, ed il sistema di difesa, Safeguard, è in tilt: dà la caccia agli esseri umani e, quando li trova, li uccide. In un recondito angolo della città sopravvive una piccola comunità umana nota come Electro-Fishers. Sono tutti destinati all’ estinzione, braccati dal Safeguard e alle prese con la scarsità di provviste.

Quando la popolazione della Terra aumentò drasticamente, l'umanità tentò di colonizzare Marte. Durante la colonizzazione furono scoperte due tecnologie aliene: le nanomacchine Bacillus e Crusnik. I coloni installarono il Bacillus nei loro corpi, che li trasformò in Methuselah. Invece installarono il Crusnik negli organismi di quattro bambini concepiti in provetta: Seth, Cain, Abel e Lilith i cui corpi rafforzati erano gli unici in grado di sopravvivere alla procedura. Quando i coloni tornarono sulla Terra, scoppiò una guerra tra i Methuselah e gli esseri umani rimasti. Abel, Cain e Seth si schierarono dalla parte dei Methuselah mentre Lilith sostenne la fazione dell'uomo. La continua guerra infine portò all'Armageddon, l'evento apocalittico accaduto 900 anni prima dall'inizio della storia. Durante la guerra, Cain impazzì e uccise Lilith. Afflitto dal dolore, Abel portò il suo corpo in Vaticano, dove fu sepolta e dove lui rimase al suo fianco piangendo per 900 anni. All'inizio della storia, i vampirici Methuselah, essendo ancora una grande forza politica e militare, continuano a fare la guerra contro i "Terran", come chiamano i normali esseri umani. La Santa Romana Chiesa, invece, è anch'essa una grande potenza militare ed è decisa a proteggere gli esseri umani dai Methuselah, con la sua sede di potere situata nel Vaticano. Inoltre i Methuselah hanno la loro capitale a Bisanzio, che è circondata da un campo di particelle che filtrano i raggi ultravioletti per proteggere la loro popolazione. Entrambi i gruppi utilizzano le "tecnologie perdute", come aeronavi, missili e computer, per intraprendere una guerra fredda l'uno contro l'altro. Una terza grande potenza, Albion, svolge un ruolo nella guerra con il suo arsenale superiore di tecnologia perduta, armi e maggiore capacità manifatturiera rispetto al Vaticano. La monarchia indipendente di Albion è un paese essenzialmente umano, ma il segreto della loro esperienza nella tecnologia perduta si trova nel Ghetto, una città sotterranea di schiavi Methuselah. Sono questi Methuselah che gestiscono e realizzano la tecnologia perduta, ma con la morte della regina di Albion, alcuni dei vampiri schiavi hanno iniziato una ribellione per la libertà di tutti i residenti del Ghetto.

La storia prende luogo nel prestigioso Istituto Todou, il cosiddetto "paradiso dei combattenti", una scuola equivalente al liceo dove, invece delle discipline canoniche, viene insegnata esclusivamente l'arte del combattimento. In realtà non si ha modo di assistere a molte lezioni, perché i protagonisti passano la maggior parte del proprio tempo in giro per i corridoi o nel cortile a picchiarsi o, nel migliore dei casi, ad allenarsi nelle numerose palestre presenti nell'istituto. Protagonisti indiscussi del manga sembrano essere, almeno per i primi due numeri, Soichiro Nagi e Bob Makihara, due nuovi studenti che, non appena arrivati a scuola, cominciano a sfidare chiunque incontrino sulla propria strada, finché non si imbattono in individui i cui poteri vanno ben oltre quelli dei normali combattenti incontrati fino a quel momento. Preso atto della propria debolezza, i due decidono quindi di aggregarsi al Club di Juken che, nonostante sembri essere il clan più forte dell'istituto, è composto da pochissimi membri a causa della storica rivalità con il Gruppo Esecutivo, una sorta di polizia interna alla scuola. Parte della storia è dedicata ad un lungo flashback in cui vengono spiegati i motivi delle controversie tra Maya Natsume, leader del Jukenbu, e Mitsuomi Takayanagi, che fa invece testa al Gruppo Esecutivo. Ma presto la trama si infittisce di legami tra vari personaggi che possono sembrare solo di passaggio per poi ritrovarli successivamente come parte attiva della storia. Viene narrato il passato dei protagonisti e lo sviluppo di Bob e Soichiro. Si scopre la vera potenza di Soichiro e il motivo per cui poi viene rapito dal padre, Sohaku Kago. Soichiro è l'ultimo erede della Casata del Teppistello. Cioè è una persona in grado di utilizzare lo spirito in maniera illimitata e di rubare le tecniche proprie dei casati avversari. Sohaku rinchiude Soichiro e lo fa combattere contro vari capifamiglia in modo che possa rubarne le tecniche. Nel frattempo utilizzando i suoi sottoposti del gruppo di F. tenta di rubare un chip con informazioni molto importanti. Mitsuomi Takayanagi che si pensava essere a capo di F in realtà non è altro che una pedina di Sohaku. Stufo di essere comandato con Maya Natsume e portandosi dietro Reiki la spada del fratello Shin Natsume vanno a liberare Soichiro e ad uccidere Sohaku.

Yoh Asakura è il discendente di una antichissima famiglia di sciamani. Fin da piccolo è in grado di vedere gli spiriti e, anziché ignorarli o essere spaventato da loro, tende sempre a farci amicizia. Il suo desiderio più grande è di vivere in tranquillità. La storia si apre a Tokyo dove inizia a frequentare la scuola insieme ad un ragazzo di nome Manta, da lui incontrato in un cimitero. Fin da subito troverà in Manta un amico importantissimo, tanto che gli rivelerà la sua abilità di intermediario con gli spiriti. Yoh si trova a Tokyo per partecipare allo Shaman Fight, ossia un torneo tra sciamani che si svolge ogni 500 anni per eleggere lo Shaman King. Chi diventa Shaman King può esaudire il suo più grande desiderio, e con l'assimilazione al grande spirito (conseguente l'incoronazione a re degli sciamani) possederà tutte le conoscenze del passato, presente e futuro.
