Tra le colline e le alte vette rocciose della costa di Santander, Maria Sautuola, una bambina di nove anni, e suo padre Marcelino, un appassionato di archeologia, scoprono i più antichi dipinti preistorici mai rinvenuti prima raffiguranti una mandria di bisonti. Tuttavia, Conchita, la madre della piccola, è turbata dalla scoperta, al pari della Chiesa cattolica, che considera i graffiti come un attacco alla verità della Bibbia. Sorprendentemente, anche la comunità scientifica guidata dall'esperto Émile Cartailhac accusa Marcelino di frode. Tutto ciò fa crollare il mondo idilliaco in cui Maria ha sempre vissuto.

Nel 1936, in un bar in Florida, Ernest Hemingway (Clive Owen) incontra per la prima volta Martha Gellhorn (Nicole Kidman). Lui è già uno scrittore affermato e sposato mentre lei ha conquistato popolarità come corrispondente di guerra, divenendo nel giro di poco tempo una delle giornaliste americane più affermate. Da quell'incontro scaturisce un'attrazione che diventa amore quando i due si incontrano nuovamente dopo il loro trasferimento in Spagna dal 1936 al 1939 per seguire da vicino e documentare l'evolversi della guerra civile. Al loro ritorno dalla guerra, Ernest e Martha decidono di fermarsi a Cuba e sposarsi ma il matrimonio è destinato a infrangersi col divorzio appena quattro anni dopo, in concomitanza con la fine della seconda guerra mondiale che aveva portato Martha troppo spesso lontano da casa.

La storia è ambientata in un mondo ricoperto da sterminati deserti sabbiosi. Chakuro è un archivista quattordicenne che vive a bordo di un'immensa isola fluttuante, la Mud Whale, che solca il “mare” di dune. Nove abitanti su dieci dell’isola fluttuante sono dotati dell’abilità di utilizzare il "saimia", ciò rappresenta allo stesso tempo una benedizione e una maledizione, poiché seppur vero che il potere è utile, è anche vero che chi ne è portatore è destinato a morte precoce. Chakuro ed i suoi giovani amici non hanno mai avuto alcun contatto con persone estranee alla Mud Whale e passano il tempo a fantasticare sugli estranei, smaniosi di incontrarli; poiché durante la navigazione hanno incrociato varie isole, ma si sono rivelate tutte disabitate o abbandonate. Un giorno la loro isola ne incrocia una altrettanto grande, in questa occasione Chakura incontra una nuova ragazza, che cambierà il suo destino.

Lavorando part-time in un ristorante per famiglie come alternativa, si innamora inspiegabilmente del direttore, un uomo di 45 anni divorziato e con un figlio giovane. Nonostante la differenza di età, Akira accetta di buon grado le sue buone maniere e la sua gentilezza, che sono invece viste come mancanza di spina dorsale dagli altri impiegati, e poco a poco, i due iniziano a capirsi. Anche se non sa il perché è così attratta da lui, Akira crede che non ci sia bisogno di una vera ragione per amare qualcuno. Così, in una giornata di pioggia, finalmente decide di dire al direttore cosa prova per lui... ma come reagirà alla notizia?
