Storia di formazione ambientata nel pieno degli anni '80 nel distretto del Queens, a New York e racconta la storia di due amici, uno bianco ed ebreo e l'altro nero. Negli Stati Uniti dilaga ancora il razzismo, motivo per cui i due giovani ambiscono a elevarsi socialmente, ma i genitori (Anne Hathaway e Jeremy Strong) del ragazzo di origine ebraica decidono di allontanarlo dall'altro e mandarlo in una scuola prestigiosa, frequentata solo da bianchi. Il ragazzo ammette di non reagire e stare zitto quando il suo amico viene insultato dai loro compagni di classe per la sua carnagione, ma sarà suo nonno (Anthony Hopkins) a insegnargli come non solo qualche decennio prima anche gli ebrei venivano vessati e cacciati. Saranno proprio le parole di suo nonno a dargli il coraggio di far sentire la sua voce per difendere chi viene discriminato.

Mentre i suoi compagni di classe sono dotati di impressionanti abilità utili in combattimento, Hajime viene sminuito per aver ottenuto solo un'abilità di trasmutazione inferiore che manca di qualsiasi potere offensivo reale. Durante una spedizione nel Grande Labirinto di Orcus, Hajime viene tradito da uno dei suoi compagni di classe, facendolo precipitare sul fondo di un abisso. Anche se sopravvive alla caduta, Hajime si trova di fronte a mostri minacciosi e disgrazie che lo fanno precipitare in un incubo lugubre. Disperato, decide di combattere per la sua sopravvivenza!
