La famiglia Ornstein, una casata di bassa nobiltà, governa una piccola tenuta nella periferia del Regno di Listia. In questa famiglia vivono due fratelli. La sorella maggiore, Mary, è una ragazza vivace che ama allenarsi con la spada sotto la guida del padre. Il fratello minore, Zion, è un ragazzo timido che adora rinchiudersi nella sua stanza a leggere libri. Nonostante caratteri opposti, i due vivono felicemente, protetti da genitori affettuosi.
