Tanis, un genio bambino, è il figlio più giovane di due scienziati pazzi. La sua famiglia ha trascorso la vita ritirandosi dalla società normale vivendo su un'isola isolata, dove la coppia conduce esperimenti sui fratelli di Tanis che li portano ad acquisire abilità anormali. Tuttavia, questa attività viene interrotta quando vengono catturati e arrestati. Tanis viene portato da funzionari del governo su un'isola più popolata, insieme ai suoi quattro fratelli: Snow, un ibrido cane-umano; Ashise, un ibrido pianta-uomo; Aisley, un ibrido umano-ragno; e Suishi, un lettore della mente. Essendo l'unico che non è stato geneticamente modificato, Tanis si assume la responsabilità di adattare i suoi fratelli alla società, il tutto cercando di nascondere le loro caratteristiche distintive.
